A message from Wakefield’s Founding Director, Paul Orsett
Wakefield Theatre Company was established in 2000 with a mission to create meaningful theatrical experiences for students and the broader Wakefield community. The company began by hosting Missoula Children’s Theatre Little Red Truck and a production of Sleeping Beauty, which featured 50 Wakefield High School students and helped get the ball rolling for what would become a vibrant theatre program. Our second production during that inaugural season was the holiday favorite Miracle on 34th Street, which delighted audiences and captured the warmth, nostalgia, and spirit of the season.
The final production of that first year was the ever-popular The Wizard of Oz: Royal Shakespeare Edition, based on the beloved 1939 film. This production not only showcased Wakefield High School performers, but also brought together students from our unique three-campus community: elementary, middle, and high school. With more than 75 performers, 24 pit musicians, and 20 technicians, The Wizard of Oz brought the season to a memorable and exciting close. More importantly, it demonstrated what theatre does so naturally: it builds community.
Theatre brings people together from every walk of life and creates a safe, supportive place for students to discover their talents, take risks, grow in confidence, and learn from one production to the next. When I accepted the position as the first theatre director at Wakefield High School, my principal, said to me, “This is just a regular curriculum school.” My response was simple, “There are talented young people at every school.”
At Wakefield, we consistently found those students or, perhaps more accurately, they found us. After 24 years, leaving Wakefield Theatre Company was both difficult and deeply meaningful. It was an honor to help build a program that has impacted so many students, families, and community members. However, knowing the new director for many years has made this transition feel absolutely right. I leave Wakefield Theatre Company in the very capable hands of Catherine Delaney, who will continue to expand the program and provide the young people of Wakefield Schools with an incredible journey in the performing arts.
